Here is a great idea for a creative writing activity for kids. Have them make faces using modeling clay (the ones in this post were created by my 11-year-old). Then have them write a script for a comic skit, as if two of the faces were talking to each other. If kids feel really motivated, have them try producing a short claymation video.
If kids are not sure where to start, you could have them use a familiar story, such as a fairy tale, as a framework. Then, though, encourage them to move beyond the story itself and make changes. They could take a sad story and add comic elements, or vice versa. They could add side episodes that were not part of the original story. Or, have students tell the story from a point of view that is not usually heard from, like the wolf in the three little pigs (see John Scieza’s The True Story of the Three Little Pigs”), or, the stepmother in Snow White.
This is a nice activity to use for kinesthetic or visual learners.
